Here are just a few fishing contest ideas to enhance your fishing trip or event.  Some people don’t like making fishing a contest and some people are not “competitive.”  That's OK - believe me, I love the solitude experienced when fishing, not worrying about how many fish I catch or how big the fish are!  But adding a contest - whether it is for bragging rights, a small wager, or just to add another element of excitement to a trip or event sure is fun!! There is absolutely no harm in a friendly little fishing contest every now and then!  I’ve summarized a few of the formats I’ve been part of on past fishing trips and events.  Have fun with them -  I am always looking for new ideas so please submit your ideas and I'll post them!

Fish Count  Ok, the most obvious fishing contest!  When the gang is out fishing, simply keep track of the fish you catch.  You catch the most fish, you win the prize (a friendly wager, no clean up or kitchen duty, etc).  I usually distribute golf-score counters to keep track of fish count.

Fish Weight "...wow - how'd he think of this one..."  I haven't done many contests by weight of the fish - but this can be done if (1) you don't plan on catching many fish of the particular species - you don't want to weigh 50 bluegill, eh? and (2) you are going to eat the fish.  The extra handling by novice anglers (us!) during weigh-in (scrambling for the cheap scale, trying to hook the fish with it, getting the camera to snap a photo of the fish on the scale, etc.) is not good for the fish and will not ensure that fish will survive!

There are many different variations of the classic "
Fish Count" or "Fish Weight" contest...I've listed some of my favorites below!
TEAMWORK...works well for groups of 4 or more!  On a multi-day trip, switch teams around.  You can track team standings and still keep individual statistics.  Prizes for top team and individual.

TIMED OR SPACIAL... Limit the contest to a specific time period (e.g., two-hours) and/or a specific area in the body of water you fishing (e.g., a particular bay, a stretch of river)
LIMITED LURE...You can refine the fish count contest by limiting the number of lure options you can use to 1 or 2.  This can be particularly effective in helping you gain confidence in a lure you would switch out after 20-minutes of inactivity!
NO MAN'S LAND...My favorite!  Select an area of a lake (for each team) that you have never fished - or wouldn't ever consider fishing - and fish your selected area for two-hours.  Keep your fish count. You will end up discovering a fishing hole  or hotspots that you wouldn't have otherwised considered!
BIG FISH / SMALL FISH... of the day by length.  Measuring the length of a fish is quick, easy, and gets the fish back in the water quickly (if you already have supper figured out!)
FISHING CONTEST IDEAS
POINTS PER SPECIES... Keep the fish count, but score different points for 2 or 3 species.  Tracking beyond 3 - maybe 4 - species can get to be quite a day's work!
